Mark Preston: Void
Sept 15th – Oct 8th
Fazakas Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by contemporary Tlingit artist Mark Preston. The opening reception is Thursday, September 15th from 7 – 9pm.
Through his exploration of traditional Northwest coast formline shapes, Preston has created a series of sculptural works in the form of unconventional, minimalist cedar panels and masks. Preston’s inventive use of the ovoid and other formline shapes breaks from tradition, which would see these shapes function as elements of a larger complex design, serving as building blocks rather than stand-alone images. In Preston’s new work, the ovoid is removed from its original context and repurposed as solitary cutouts within vast white panels. By portraying these traditional shapes as lone areas of negative space, Preston playfully transforms the ovoid into an actual void.
Mark Preston lives and works in Whitehorse, Yukon.
